What It Is and Who It’s For:
You are an expert in your field. You’ve spent years doing research and crafting rigorous scholarly articles. But have you ever wished you could share your work outside of academic journals? Write for an audience beyond your peers? Maybe you’re a full-time professor who wants to deepen your commitment to public scholarship. Or you’re an adjunct or recent graduate who’d like to keep your research alive and make money at the same time.
Writing for the public is a very different genre than writing for other academics, but we promise we can help you do it. In this course you’ll learn:
- How to find a story with public stakes in your research
- How to structure an article for a general audience outlet
- How to craft a pitch that will get editors’ attention
- How to find venues that welcome contributions by public scholars
Your Public Voice is more than an online course; in addition to learning about a new industry and getting expert tips, you’ll be actively workshopping ideas with your instructors and classmates. You’ll also get a 1-on-1 session with Sara and Elise to discuss your work and writing goals.
At the end of four weeks you’ll have an outline or draft of an article, a solid pitch, and suggestions for where to send it. Plus you’ll have a new set of knowledge and skills for earning income based on the work you already do!
When and How We Meet:
The class runs from July 8 – 31. Each week will have two modules: the first one informative, the second practical. So on Mondays, we’ll post lectures and readings with an assignment. On Thursdays, we’ll apply what you’ve learned to start workshopping your own materials.
The majority of the modules will be self-paced and asynchronous. But because this is more workshop than online course — meaning we’ll be spending a lot of time reading and critiquing each other’s work — we want to foster a sense of community from the get-go. This means that we’ll ask you to be available for a 1-hour real time group conversation/introduction during the first class, and for another 1-hour wrap-up at the end.
We will be using Google Classroom, so all you need is a gmail account!

The cost is $400.00. We are offering a discounted rate of $350.00 to our Patreon subscribers! If you subscribe at any level before enrolling, we will honor the lower rate.
The deadline to enroll is July 1st. Payment in full must be received at the time of enrollment. Payments are refundable until June 24th. After June 24th we cannot offer refunds unless the course is cancelled.

Your Instructors:
Sara Tatyana Bernstein, PhD and Elise M. Chatelain, PhD are the co-founders of Dismantle Magazine. They created Dismantle to be an accessible, engaging forum for research in critical fashion, popular culture, and cultural studies. Transforming scholarship into engaging magazine articles that reach a broad and diverse audience — that’s what they do every day!
Sara will focus on the material from the writer’s perspective. She currently balances freelance writing, co-running Dismantle, and teaching at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Her work has been published in Vox, The Outline, BuzzFeed Reader, Inside Higher Ed, and more.
As editor for Dismantle Magazine, Elise will focus on that side of the writing relationship. She’s worked with dozens of writers from academic backgrounds to help their brilliant ideas shine in a web magazine format. Elise’s experience as an academic coach also helps her find and present your best work.
